Horse drawn hackney carriage services began operating in London in the early part of the 17th century. In the 19th century, Hansom cabs largely replaced the older designs because of their improved speed and safety.
The first petrol engine taxis began operating in London in 1903.
The first major improvement after the development of the taximeter transpired in the late 1940s, when two-way radios were fitted in taxis. This enabled taxi drivers and their offices to be in touch and reach customers more economically than previously, such as having to use public telephones. The next major advance happened in the 1980s, when computer based equipment assisted in dispatching taxis. Now technology exists that uses GPS to track the location of taxis and improve dispatching even further.
