New Councillors, New Council

Tonight saw the first meeting of the new council following the elections that were held a few weeks ago. The dramatic shift in power between the Conservatives (who got 40370 votes producing 32 councillors) and Labour (who got 23172 votes producing 13 councillors) has meant a lot of new faces were to be seen, 25 out of the 52 in fact.
The first meeting was however saw nothing contentious arise, that no doubt will be later in the week when planning for the old hospital site will be discussed. The previous Mayor, Cllr Ken Pacey now becomes Loughboroughs Deputy Mayor and Cllr Joe Tormey who represents Lemyngton Ward ascends to the Mayoral position. Given such a dramatic change in both power and people the question to be asked if there are going to be any radical changes in policy.
The new Leader of Charnwood Borough Council, Cllr Richard Shepherd was quoted as saying "The new Council got off to a good start as Councillors and guests warmly welcomed the new Mayor and expressed their thanks to the outgoing Mayor for all his work. "Councillors are now looking forward to working effectively together for the benefit of all residents of Charnwood.
