Police in Loughborough have joined forces with officers from Charnwood Borough Council, the fire service, local community and other partners in a bid to improve an area of Loughborough.

They will also look to clean up the Peel Drive area during the week-long event, which begins today. (Monday 4 June 2007)

The partnership approach aims to reduce the fear of crime and anti-social behaviour and improve the environment for residents living there so they can take a sense of pride in the local community.

Charnwoods Community Safety team, Cleansing and Housing departments plus the Street Wardens will all be taking part in the event.

The action will take place in an area bordered by Pinfold Gate, Sparrow Hill, Nottingham Road, Queens Road, Empress Road, New King Street, Leicester Road and Barrow Street.

Cllr David Snartt, Charnwood Borough Councils Cabinet Member for Community Safety, said: "This event will help make a big difference to the local community.

"Its important that residents concerns are understood so we can work in partnership with several agencies to help deliver the solutions to real problems.

"That way we can improve the environment for all and allow them to take pride in their community once again."

Litter, graffiti, abandoned vehicles, fly-tipping and other grot spots will all be cleaned up on Monday.

Crime and fire prevention, including property marking and smoke detector installation, will be carried out during Tuesday 5 and Wednesday 6 June throughout the area.

Thursday (June 7) will see anti-bullying and drugs awareness initiatives taking place, while there will also be a junior detective scheme at Cobden Junior School as pupils.

Friday is designated as a Community Engagement Day when there will be a knife amnesty bin, displays from the Council and emergency services plus a recruitment drive by the Local Resident Association.

There will also be daily high-profile police patrols and checks at graffiti hotspots.

One of the neighbourhood beat officers for the area, PC 2054 Tam Bains added, "This is the first Environmental Action Week in Leicestershire and it will enable us to focus on one specific neighbourhood and work closely with a wide range of partners.  Well be able to concentrate our efforts on the issues that are important to the community and hopefully it will make a big difference to residents, restore a sense of pride in the area and make life better for everybody."

"The work carried out during the week will not finish at the end of the 5 days; we will continue to work with residents after the week is over to change things for the future."

Cllr Snartt added: "I look forward to seeing the results of this excellent partnership approach."
