Aggravated theft of a motor vehicle near Burton on the Wolds

criminalOfficers in Melton are appealing for witnesses following an aggravated theft of a motor vehicle on the B676 near Burton on the Wolds.

The incident happened at around 11am on Sunday June 3, 2007 when the driver of a silver Mazda 6 was forced to pull over by the occupants of a red Vauxhall Astra.

Three men, wearing balaclavas and carrying baseball bats or similar weapons, got out of the Astra and forced the driver and the two passengers in the Mazda to get out of their car. One of the men then drove off in the Mazda, followed by a second the Astra, towards the A46. Its believed the third suspect made off on foot.

The driver of the Mazda received minor injuries and was treated at the scene by paramedics.

The police helicopter and officers from the dog unit were deployed to search the area for both the vehicles and the suspects.

The Mazda was found ablaze just over 12 hours later at the junction of Glebe Street and Cartwright Street in Loughborough and is currently undergoing forensic examination.

Detective Sergeant Pete Wheeler from North area CID said: "Were keen to speak to anyone who witnessed this incident or who may have seen the Astra in the area on Sunday morning.

"Wed also like to speak to anyone who knows where the Mazda 6 was between being stolen at 11am and then being found on fire at 11.30pm.

"It had its windscreen smashed during the incident and this may be a detail that sticks in your mind. If you remember seeing a silver car with a smashed windscreen yesterday then please get in touch.

"Any information you have regarding this incident or the people and vehicles involved, regardless of how insignificant it may seem, could be vital to the investigation, so please do contact us."
