Young womens group hosts charity auction and car wash.
Posted on 15/06/07

The Amazon Young Womens Project based at Leicestershire County Councils Mountfields Lodge Youth Centre, in Loughborough is holding a charity auction and car wash to raise money for Gambia in Africa. Some of the money raised will be used to ensure that a Gambian village has access to drinking water. The event is taking place on Saturday 16th June at 12pm. Mike Jones, Chairman of the County Council will be attending and showing his support for the event.
Earlier this year a group of young people from the project spent a week in Gambia working with a school they had linked with in 2006. They raised enough money for their travel, accommodation and to put a roof on the Gambian school. This year villagers from Gambia have asked them to return to help with the cost of drinking water for them - the nearest well is half a mile away.
Items to be auctioned have been donated by local businesses and include a mobile phone, tickets for Donnington Race Course, a past life regression session, DVD player and items of clothing - in total there are over 40 lots to auction.
People attending will also have the opportunity to meet members of the womens group and see displays of their work in Gambia and other projects they have been involved in.
Mike Jones, Chairman of the County Council, said:
"These young women have achieved so much since setting up this project and have helped many people in Gambia. I hope that people will come and support them on Saturday. I would also like to thank local businesses for donating the items which are truly worth bidding for."
