Amazons Auction and Car Wash
Posted on 17/06/2007
P. Klein
A group of girls in Loughborough have been working hard to help provide drinking water for a village in The Gambia. About 600 people in the village of Madianu will benefit from the girls efforts. The girls, all aged between 13 to 19, have previously assisted the village by providing a roof on the school. The girls efforts so far have included a sponsored bike ride, a group silence and a sponsored tie together. Forthcoming events organised by the girls, who are all part of The Amazon Young Womens Project based at Leicestershire County Councils Mountfields Lodge Youth Centre, includes a walk from Loughborough to Kegworth (and back) and possible a Garden Party in the Summer. With all these events it is not unsurprising to hear that last year the group won the Queens Award for Volunteering.
This Saturday (17th June 2007) however was an auction and car wash at the Mountfields Lodge Youth Centre to raise funds for the project which is planning to build a new well to save the villagers a half an hour walk to fetch water. Also they will be sending a few of their members over to see the work first hand and to assist in the redecoration of the school. Many people and local organisations donated items to be auctioned for the event, including Tmobile, Voodoo Consoles, The Sun Emporium, Yeomans, Tylers, Thomas Cook, Max Speilman, Reel Cinemas and Pink. In all there were approximately 48 items up for auction. The Market Traders association donated £100 as did Walkers Crisps who had also helped out with the landscaping around the Youth Centre earlier in the week.
The event attracted many bidders and was very well attended. Amongst the bidders were Mike Jones, Chairman of the County Council and his wife Marj (pictured above with Youth Leader Janet Holland). Mike said:"These young women have achieved so much since setting up this project and have helped many people in Gambia. I would also like to thank local businesses for donating the items which are truly worth bidding for."
The girls are looking to raise a total of about £7,000 for the project and if you can help in any way, or want to know more about the Amazon Young Womens Project in Loughborough please contact Janet Holland on 07971146499.
UPDATE 19th June 2007
We have been contacted by organisor Janet Holland who informs us that the event raised a massive £1080. On behalf of the group she wishes to thank the local shop keepers and members of the public who supported the event.
