Primary Schools Receive a Big Book
Posted on 22/06/2007
P. Klein
Learning Traffic Safety is something that is an important part of growing up.
Efforts are being made to ensure that Children in Loughborough, and elsewhere in the County, learn about Road Safety. Leicestershire County Council has produced a really big book for Children to help teach them about Road Safety. And we mean a really big book! The Road Safety Big Book stands at over half a metre tall, and has sections which include catching a bus safely, crossing the road at different types of crossing as well as hazards that can be found on country roads.
It has been made to Primary Schools in the area has been designed for pre-school and early years children and features large colour illustrations, alongside black and white pictures and words that can be photocopied by teachers.
Mr Robert Prior, a Headteacher said, "The book has been really popular with the children. Being so large it can be looked at by children in small groups, pointing out the various road safety messages in the pictures together. "
Other initiatives by the County Council that benefit Primary School Children in the Loughborough area include asking schools to create travel plans so that the amount of traffic outside schools is reduced and the Star Walker scheme. The County Councils Star Walker Scheme identifies a Star Zone (about a 10-minute walk away) around the school and asks drivers to leave their cars outside the zone and walk the rest of the way. Children are given a passport for collecting a stamp each time they walk, which they can then exchange for rewards.
No mention has been made if new bookshelves are required to store the new books!
