Andy Reed not selected
Posted on 29/06/2007

Andy Reed, MP for Loughborough has missed out on the position of Sports Minister. Richard Caborn has stepped down from his post as Sports Minister after six years to mastermind Englands effort to win the right to host the 2018 football World Cup. Andy Reed, together with Gerry Sutcliffe, MP for Bradford South, and Ian Austin, MP for Dudley North were contenders for the position. However it is Sutcliffe, 54, who replaces Richard Caborn, who steps down after six years, and is one of the latest appointments announced by new prime minister Gordon Brown, who took over from Tony Blair on Wednesday.
Andy Reed is a keen sports enthusiast who was believes the success in sport in this country will be driven by opportunities at the grass root level. In a recent document submitted to Gordon Brown, Andy Reed calls for
- Setting up a task force to explore ways of benefiting sport through the tax system
- To allocate more PFI credits for sport and leisure projects
- To tailor funding for training to better suit the sports and recreation sectors
- To mainstream funding programmes for grassroots community sport
- To reinvest, pound for pound, the Treasury receipt from sport-related activities.
Andy Reed said of Gordon Browns election to the position of Prime Minister: "I am pleased for Gordon that he now has the opportunity to serve the country. I know he is driven by a sense of purpose and a simple desire to serve. He is not caught by the trappings of power. He will be a good Prime Minister and I am proud to have worked with him in the Treasury over the last 2 years.". Referring to Sport Andy Reed has said "The key to supporting the potential of sport is better coordination in Government, both nationally and locally. A national framework for the cross-Government role of sport, investing sport as a material concern for other departments, would give the right support to the localised contribution of sport in delivering social value.
