Wet weather affects grass cutting service
Posted on 04/07/2007
Loughborough Newsdesk

Record June rainfall is taking its toll on Loughboroughs highway verge maintenance service.
Various factors have meant that grass verges cannot be maintained to the services normal standard. The mild but damp weather has encouraged greater grass growth. The cutting takes longer, wet grass sticks to equipment, time is being spent cleaning it and equipment is also getting bogged down on water logged verges.
The County Council leaves grass cuttings to enrich the growth. However, in this wet weather, the piles of grass do not disperse evenly over the ground and are therefore more visible.
Nicholas Rushton, Cabinet member for Highways and Transportation, said: "To deal with these extreme weather conditions, we will be securing extra mowing resources. We will ensure that any vegetation which may affect drivers visibility is our top priority.
To contact the Highways department with any problems with the roads or streetlighting call Roadline on 0800 62 62 03.
