Loughborough MP raises Postal Issues in Parliament
Posted on 06/07/07
P. Klein

Jackson Coachworks have been mentioned in Parliament by Loughborough MP Andy Reed to highlight the problems of the postal service.
He said that Loughborough company Jackson Coachworks requires its post by 9am, however frequently the post does not arrive to midday and sometimes later in the afternoon.
Royal Mail workers are currently prepared to hold another one day strike which undoubtedly hit businesses further and possibly force a movement towards quicker and cheaper methods of communication e.g. email.
Andy Reed had been contacted by Loughborough businesses about the standard of Royal Mail service recently and as well as taking it up locally he challenged John Hutton MP to intervene by asking POST COM to insist on better service delivery. The Minister agreed he would contact the regulator on behalf of Andy Reed and his local businesses.
Further information (transcript from Parliament):Mr. Andy Reed (Loughborough) (Lab/Co-op): While liberalisation might be good for Royal Mail in the long run, is my right hon. Friend aware of the difficulties that many of the cost-cutting measures that are taking place at the moment are creating for local businesses? For example, Jackson Coachworks in my constituency requires its post by 9 oclock in the morning in order to do its business but is not getting it until at least midday, and sometimes in the early afternoon. Will he use his good offices to be in contact with Postcomm to ensure that the service that businesses require to carry on day by day is delivered on the ground?
Mr. Hutton: Yes, we will certainly do that. We keep a careful watch on all these matters. However, Royal Mail now operates in a highly competitive marketplace, and if it is not delivering the service that its business customers want, there are probably other companies that will. It therefore has a simple set of choices ahead of itto be responsive to the needs of its customers or lose business.
