deer pictured at Bradgate Park Young people are being encouraged to go wild and explore the natural world with the wildlife pack Wild About this summer. The Wild About pack aims to help aspiring junior nature detectives record wildlife they see in the areas in which they live or visit. Produced by Leicestershire County Councils Community Heritage Initiative, with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Rutland County Council, the family-friendly pack for 6-14 year olds is designed to have all the information needed to carry out studies across the summer.

The pack, which is also available online at www.leics.gov.uk/celebrating_wildlife, includes how to make your own field kit, safety tips and ideas on how to record and document wildlife, with themed surveys and activities for different times of the year. Creepy crawlies, trees, and ladybirds, are just some of the wildlife featured that junior detectives can investigate. Additional activities, fact sheets and games are also offered through a supporting volunteer run website at www.wildabout.org.uk.

The website allows each section to be downloaded, or, if you do not have access to the internet, contact the Community Heritage Initiative, Leicestershire County Council, Holly Hayes Environment and Heritage Resources Centre, 216 Birstall Road, Birstall, Leicester, LE4 4DG.
