Charnwood Museum in Loughborough, is about to become base camp for a miniature army. The little soldiers are part of an exhibition about the Palitoy Company of toy makers and are better known as Action Men.
The new troops will be ready for inspection in Charnwood from the 14th of July until 23rd September 2007. Also on parade will be a selection of other dolls and toys made by Palitoy at their factory in Owen Street, Coalville between 1937 and 1986. Tiny Tears, Care Bears, Star Wars and Mainline Railways are just some of the childrens wish list toys that will be on display.
The exhibition also explores the history of toys and toy making through Leicestershire Environment and Heritage Services toy collection. Gems on display include a 19th century paper theatre, a toy theatre and puppets from around the world. Other treasures from the toy box on show will include a 19th century Spode dolls tea service and a giant Noahs Ark.
Fiona Ure, Assistant Keeper of Home and Family Life said "This is the first time that such a large part of the Leicestershire museum services toy collection will be on display in the Charnwood area. I am sure local people will fondly recall similar items in their own toy boxes.
Charnwood Museum is located in Queens Park in Loughborough. Opening hours are 10am to 4.30pm on Monday to Saturday and 2pm until 5pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays. Admission is to the museum and the exhibition is free.
Charnwood Museum is run as a partnership between Leicestershire County Council and Charnwood Borough Council.
