East Midlands Airport published its first ever Annual Community Investment Report yesterday.
The report, which is available from their website www.eastmidlandsairport.com highlights some of the community and environment achievements and progress made in the financial year 2007/07.
The airport, which employs many people from Loughborough, is making great progress. For instance despite passenger numbers increasing by 20% they actually managed to reduce energy consumption. The plan for the airport is to become carbon neutral by the year 2012.
Other key figures contained in the report include:
- The Community Fund awarded a total of 92,665 to local community groups across Leicestershire (38 groups), Derbyshire (29 groups) and Nottinghamshire (17 groups).
- Successfully retained the international environment standard ISO 4001; having held this standard since October 2002.
- An employee volunteer scheme took its first steps, seeing over 600 hours of volunteering in local communities.
- Recorded levels for air quality remain well below the Air Quality Standard levels. 15% of electricity came from renewable sources.
- Used 190,625,000 litres of water " equating to approx 38 litres per passenger.
- Recycled 183 tonnes of waste " a record year First Airport in Europe to launch WebTrak the on-line information tool that allows anybody to view aircraft information in our air space. On average, 165 people a day visit the site.
- Awarded silver for our education resource pack, Up in the Air by the Green Organisation in November 2006.
- The target of 95% of aircraft on track up to 3,000 was achieved by all of the main aircraft operators, 98% of departures complying with the routings.
- 580 people contacted the Airport in 2006/07, generating a total of 7,978 complaints 60% (4810) of these complaints were from 5 people
- Whilst the number of complaints has risen since 2005, the number of people contacting us has fallen by over 17% (699 to 580)
Penny Coates, Managing Director said: "The report has been created to inform local communities, stakeholders, passengers and staff of how we are actively investing in the community as well as the environmental measures we undertake at the Airport. We are very aware of our responsibilities and continuously strive to improve them in all aspects of our business.
