airplaneAt 9.15am yesterday (Thursday July 19) police received a report of a suspicious vehicle parked in a car park at East Midlands Airport.

The security alert was sparked after police were told of suspicious containers left beneath a vehicle in car park four.

Due to the location of the vehicle a 100 metre cordon was put in place which included part of the car park and a small section of the terminal building. The areas were evacuated as a precautionary measure in the interests of public safety. Information about the security alert was placed on the East Midlands Airport advising passengers of the situation.

A police investigation was immediately launched and has revealed that there is no threat from the vehicle or the containers. The cordon was lifted at 11.15am.

East Midlands airport told inLoughborough that the inconvenience to passengers was minimal and that no planes, either inbound or outbound were affected by the alert.

Superintendent Sally Healy who oversaw the incident said: "The safety of the public and our officers is always our first priority and this was at the forefront of our minds this morning.

"We worked closely with the Airport and the other emergency services throughout the incident and the matter was brought to a safe conclusion as swiftly as possible.
