james metcalfeLoughborough student Jeremy Metcalfe made a welcome return to the podium and with it a move back inside the Formula Renault UK Championship top six. This was thanks to an outstanding performance at Snetterton Circuit yesterday, Sunday, 29th July, during round 14 of the season.

The AKA Cobra star, who endured a brace of difficult qualifying sessions at the Norfolk venue on Saturday, lined up ninth on the grid for round 14 but a tremendous start saw the Hampshire racer move into the top five early on before a nice piece of opportunist overtaking at Coram Curve on lap three.

With team-mate Adam Christodoulou and Will Bratt battling over third place just ahead of Jeremy, the 19-year-old pounced when both drivers ran wide on the run to the Bomb Hole and he made the move count through Coram to snatch third place.

Closing on second position for the next few laps, it looked as though Jeremy would be able to mount a challenge as the race headed past half distance but in the end he settled for third place, a welcome result and one which enables him to move back into sixth position in the championship standings.

"Im really pleased to be back on the podium, I certainly didnt expect this result at the start of the race from ninth on the grid, said the Loughborough University student, "It just seemed like everything went my way, people were bashing into each other and I was there to pick up the pieces really.

"The car was working quite well, I made some changes for the second race and they worked. When I could run in clean air the car performed well, to be back on the podium is what we needed and its a great finish to the weekend.

During the earlier 13th round, Jeremy had a tough challenge ahead of him from an uncharacteristically low 15th on the grid but the BillChaser-backed ace came through strongly to finish in the top 10.

Climbing three places early on, Jeremy slipped back on lap 10 but then staged a fresh comeback during the remaining eight laps to achieve a welcome 10th place finish, a good effort and a result he wasnt expecting after a troublesome qualifying run on Saturday.

"To finish 10th wasnt too bad really as I had understeer and when youre tucked up behind someone with a lack of downforce youve got problems, added Jeremy, "Wed have much rather been at the sharp end fighting for a podium but considering where we started I dont think we can be too disappointed with the result.

There is now a three week break in the Formula Renault UK race calendar with rounds 15 and 16 of the championship taking place at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit in Kent on 18th/19th August.

Before then, Jeremy will return to the track at his home venue, Thruxton Circuit in Hampshire, on Wednesday, 8th August, as part of an official Formula Renault UK test.
