Charnwood Council Achieves Acreditation
Posted on 04/08/2007

A series of initiatives to facilitate a reduction in Charnwood Borough Councils carbon footprint by increasing energy efficiency has been recognised by a leading national organisation.
The Energy Institute has awarded Charnwood the Energy Efficiency Accreditation Scheme (EEAS) for its commitment to improving energy efficiency and tackling climate change. The Energy Efficiency Accreditation Scheme is the UKs only independent award recognising achievements in reducing energy use by leading organisations in industry, commerce and the public sector.
In order to gain the prestigious standard, the Council in Loughborough was put through an extensive evaluation by an independent, experienced assessor who looked at a number of areas relating to energy efficiency.
These included management commitment to energy efficiency, investment in energy efficiency measures and improvements as well as raising awareness on energy efficiency with members of staff. Evaluations are carried out by independent, experienced assessors who examine an organisations performance in a number of areas. Organisations who meet the standards required by the scheme can go on to become accredited. To gain Energy Efficiency Accreditation, organisations must be able to demonstrate at least three years continual investment in energy efficiency, with positive results in terms of declining (specific) energy use.
Accreditation lasts for three years after which time an organisation must apply for re-accreditation. To date, over two hundred organisations have gained accreditation by reaching the standards set for the Scheme and a large number of others are on the way to doing so.
As part of its improvement drive for energy efficiency, the Authority has set up specialist energy monitoring and reporting software, introduced a climate heroes switch-off campaign and setting challenging targets for improvements in energy efficiency and carbon emissions.
Cllr David Snartt, Charnwood Borough Councils Climate Change Champion, said: "Im delighted the Council has received this award " it shows our commitment in doing our bit to help tackle climate change.
"It follows on from our success in receiving the ISO14001 standard for our environmental management system and proves once again we are leading in Leicestershire when it comes to helping the environment.
Karl Letten, Charnwood Borough Councils Change Programme Support Officer (Environment) said: "Improving energy efficiency is an important part of tackling climate change and this award recognises the steps that we have taken to reduce the energy we use.
"The steps we have taken have included simple switch off campaigns for computers and printers and improving the energy efficiency of lighting and equipment.
"These steps are part of an ongoing process to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases from council activities and to play our part in tackling climate change.
