playDOORSTAFF in Loughborough have a prime accessory this season as they smarten up their act in an effort to make themselves more visible to the public.

Charnwood Borough Council, the Police and the Crime Out Of Loughborough (COOL) organisation have joined together to encourage the pub and clubs to adopt a more professional image, wearing their distinct SIA badges and working together to deter crime and anti-social behaviour.

The SIA is the Security Industry Authority; it exists to manage the licensing of the private security industry as set out in the Private Security Industry Act 2001. It also aims to raise standards of professionalism and skills within the private security industry and to promote and spread best practice.

Allison Fadesco, from the Community Safety Unit at Charnwood Borough Council, explained: "The identity badges are designed to make the door staff highly visible from the crowd. Under licensing terms, doormen and women must have completed their training and wear the badge on their arm in an armband or around their necks. This sends out a clear signal that they are trained staff and hopefully this will help to prevent bad behaviour.

"As well as this there are various projects taking place to help reduce violent crime within the town centre such as the Street Marshals, who will also be wearing the new armbands."

Sergeant 1666 Ian Stone, from Loughborough local policing unit, said; "I am pleased to day that there has been a very positive take up of this by door staff at many pubs and clubs in Loughborough but there are still some people who are refusing to display their license. I want clubbers and pub goers to be able to clearly identify the trained door staff around the town and having their license on display is an obvious way of doing this. As part of our summer campaign to crack down on alcohol fuelled anti-social behaviour and violent crime, we will be enforcing the law and insisting that people who work on the doors have their license on display."
