Crime Prevention In Loughborough
Posted on 22/08/2007
P. Klein
A free crime prevention evening is being held in Loughborough for the owners of private rented accommodation.
Current crime analysis shows that people, including students, who live in multi occupancy rented properties, are more likely to be burgled than other tenants. Local criminals know that student properties are often left insecure and are likely to contain several computers, televisions and other valuable items.
The police are working with Community Safety Officers at Charnwood Borough Council to reduce the number of burglaries in the Borough.
A crime prevention evening is being held at Charnwood Borough Council offices on Southfields from 7pm - 9pm on Monday 3 September 2007 to help landlords protect their rented properties, keep their tenants secure and avoid costly property repairs. The police have written to 350 landlords who are members of Loughborough Universitys accredited landlord scheme to invite them along but are extending the invitation to all landlords in the area.
Anyone who owns a rented property is welcome to drop in during the evening of Monday 3 September where the police and representatives from other community safety organisations will be available to give advice and information on how to protect their property and make it more attractive to future tenants.
PC 1193 Dave Bliss, said; "We would like to see as many landlords as possible. If you own a property that you rent to students or private tenants then please drop in at some point during the evening and talk to us. Many of the things you can do cost little or nothing and cut price crime prevention items, such as window and door locks, will be available to buy on the night.
"We will also be running a campaign when the students return at the end of September to encourage them to think about their own responsibilities when it comes to securing their belongings."
Allison Fadesco from Charnwood Borough Councils Community Safety Unit, said: "This is something we welcome as a great opportunity for people to take positive action. We are working with the police, Loughborough University and Loughborough Students Union to reduce the chance of students becoming victims of crime and this is just one of the initiatives we have planned."
