clubbers in LoughboroughPolice in Loughborough have unveiled their latest (unconventional) tool in the fight against alcohol fuelled anti-social behaviour - mints!

Police officers and door staff will be handing out thousands of packets of mints to clubbers and pub goers in Loughborough town centre over the coming months in an drive to cut drunken violent crime and anti-social behaviour after closing time.

The mints are packaged in small credit card sized packets with the message; "Which Loughborough bars will you be in tonight? Think safe, drinks safe, be safe or get arrested."

Its hoped the sweets will divert club-goers from becoming aggressive and invoke a sense of fun instead.

Inspector Mark Cuddihy, Commander of Loughborough local policing unit said; "The mints are part of a wider summer campaign we are running in the town to reduce problems associated with anti-social behaviour and violent crime, which can increase during the longer summer evenings.

"This initiative is an unconventional one but I hope clubbers will see the funny side of it and that it will divert peoples minds away from public disorder and reduce the potential for violence and anti-social behaviour.

"We are working with Pubwatch members and running a number of campaigns this summer to reduce problems in the town at night. We have got extra high visibility officers patrolling the streets on a Friday and Saturday night who will be rigidly enforcing the towns no alcohol zone, and we are encouraging the pub and clubs to adopt a more professional image by ensuring that their door staff wear display their licenses on their arm or around their neck in order to make them clearly identifiable to customers."

The police have 1, 600 packs of mints in white and blue packets to give away.
