Statistics released by ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents) this week show that East Midlands Airport near Loughborough has the highest increase in August bank holiday traffic than any other UK Airport, compared to the same time last year.

This weekend, the Airport is expected to see more than 74,000 people travelling into and out of the Castle Donington based site, a 7% increase on the same time last year.

In 2006, 69,485 passengers travelled through East Midlands Airport between Friday 25 and Monday 28 August. This year, the busiest day is set to be today (Friday 24 August) when nearly 20,000 passengers are forecast to pass through the doors. The most popular destinations for passengers in the East Midlands are Palma closely followed by Dublin and Alicante.

Penny Coates, Managing Director, East Midlands Airport said

"Traditionally, this weekend is one of our busiest times of the year, with people making the most of the last few days of the official summer holidays. So far this year, we have had month on month growth of passenger numbers compared to this time last year and it is certainly encouraging to see the statistics from ABTA for August.

With the increase in passenger numbers at this busy time of year, travellers are reminded of the security measures in place and are urged to allow plenty of time to pass through the Airport.
