kebab meat in LoughboroughThe next time you leave a club in the early hours of the morning and head to the nearby take away shop remember that kebabs sold in Leicestershire may not be quite what they seem to be. By law a Kebab must be lamb or mutton however a recent survey by Leicestershires Trading Standards Officers showed that they have meat from other animals in them. (beef and chicken).

LCCs Trading Standards Service found that 25% of samples taken were not the required lamb or mutton, and gave warnings to the owners of the businesses who were selling the kebabs.

David Bull, Head of Trading Standards, said: "Customers expect doner kebabs to be made of lamb or mutton. Other types of kebab meat are available from wholesalers but if retailers want to put these on their menus they must make it clear what other meat is used. We will continue to take occasional samples of doner kebabs with a view to making sure customers are getting what they expect, and what they are paying for. This is also important for those businesses who are using the name correctly so that they are not disadvantaged in the marketplace.
