Drinks carton recycling
Posted on 31/08/2007
P. Klein
Charnwood Borough Council has introduced a two-year trial to recycle drinks cartons. The trial will provide Charnwood residents with a facility to recycle paper based liquid food and drink cartons, the sort of thing that contain a variety of liquids, such as milk, juice, sauces and drinks.
The cartons are made from a mixture of cardboard, plastic and aluminium and once these materials have been separated, they can be recycled into other items, such as paper products, plasterboard linker, high-strength paper bags, furniture, pure aluminium, paraffin, or to generate energy.
The UK beverage carton manufacturers produce approximately 55,000 tonnes of cartons each year, which equates to approximately 2.3kg of cartons per household " all of which could be recycled.
Kath Kay , Waste Policy Manager, said: "This is really good news for the residents of Charnwood, meaning that empty cartons which have previously been going to waste will now be put to good use. Im delighted that were able to offer this recycling opportunity, and I hope residents will take advantage of the scheme.
Collection banks can be found at the following locations:
Sainsburys, Greenclose Lane, Loughborough, LE11 5AS
Somerfield, Melton Road, Syston, LE7 2HB
Tesco, Park Road, Loughborough, LE11 2EX
Somerfield, Wanlip Lane, Birstall, LE4 4JU
Asda, Barkby Thorpe Road, Thurmaston, LE4 8GN
Food and drinks cartons should be washed and squashed before being put into the collection banks.
