Further news on Stabbing above Ashby Square News
Posted on 18/09/2007
Loughborough Newsdesk
We reported last week on a stabbing in Loughborough that has left a man in critical condition in Queens Medical Centre after receiving serious head and chest injuries.
Since then a third man has been arrested by Police in Loughborough. Two men had previously been arrested by the Police, ages 36 and 37. They have subsequently been release on bail whilst additional enquiries are made into the incident. The third man is a 22 year old who was arrested on Sunday, he is currently in custody.
The police were alerted to the attack on Wednesday by a passenger on a bus outside Ashby Square News and now the police are asking for any other people who saw something to come forward and assist in the investigation. If you were on the number 127 bus which stopped outside the Ashby Square News at 4:40pm the Police do really need your help. DI Simon Hurst said: "If you were sitting on the upper deck of this bus you may have had a good view into the window of the flat where the assault took place. You may have witnessed events leading up to the incident or directly following the attack. Even the smallest details could be very important.
Whilst this is a shocking incident, figures suggest that nationally knife crime is on the decrease. There has been various legislation over recent years which aim to control the sale and carrying of knives together with other offensive weapons. The British Crime Survey suggests that the number of violent incidents relating to knives during 2005/2006 was, at 169,000, around half the level of 340,000 in 1995, there had however been a small increase in knife incidents when compared to the previous year. Overall violent incidents that involved knives were only 8% in 1995 and 7% in 2005 - 2006. Anyone can be the victim of crime, however it is young males aged 14 to 24 who are the most at risk.
Police however now routinely are issued with vests that are stab proof. Recently Essex paramedics also have been issued with the same equipment.
