Burleigh College Open Day

Burleigh College Open Morning. John Smith, Marj Jones, Mike JonesToday saw an Open Morning at the most improved college in Leicestershire, Burleigh Community College in Loughborough.

The staff and students at Burleigh College have obviously devoted much energy and enthusiasm into raising the standards of the College and the expectations of staff and students alike. There was almost a buzz of enthusiasm in the air as prospective students and their parents were taken on guided tours of the schools facilities which boast a sports centre and indoor swimming pool. However although Burleigh has a reputation for sporting excellence the staff and pupils were eager to stress that the academic facilities, such as 12 science laboratories, were second to none. This is something that has enabled Burleigh to increase the number of students attaining 5 or more A*-C grades substantially. The college last year also had numerous students being accepted at Oxford or Cambridge. During the open day visitors were also allowed to enter lessons to witness first hand teaching being carried out.

Student involvement appears key to the motivation and success of the college. With each group or parents and pupils were representatives from the School Council to answer any questions the group may have had from a pupils perspective. The school council has representatives from each form and provides a real voice for expressing the students desires to improve the college and there is real consultation between the college and the council of policy changes. Another chance was given to visitors to question the students after the tour.

The College, with its 1,300 students, 2,000 community uses and 200 staff is a vast complex and an important part of Loughboroughs community and John Smith the Principal and his team are obviously doing a great job. Mike Jones, Leicestershire County Council Leader and County Councillor for Loughborough East who visited the open morning told inLoughborough: "The College was very impressive and an obvious great improvement in recent years was reflected in GCSE results.

If you missed the Open Morning there will be an Open Evening this Thursday (4th October 2007).
