challengeNicky Morgan, our potential Conservative MP for Loughborough has just released the results of a survey she carried out into the opinions of younger inhabitants living in our neighbourhood about the proposals by the Conservative Party for a National Citizens Service.

This comes shortly after the news that our local council is placing young people, a quantity of who have agreed to Acceptable Behaviour Contracts, on courses with the Army in a bid to give them confidence to try  new skills and challenges.

David Cameron has put the idea forward that the National Citizens Service would be a mandatory 6 week course for all youngsters leaving school.  The idea is intended to develop the talents, dedication and energy of younger people and to help them grow as individuals by giving them challenges and allowing them to put something back into our society.

The proposed programme would have 3 main components:

  • Community service
  • A week-long residential course, providing a chance to mix with others
  • A challenging mission

Over half, the majority,  of those who responded said they had previously been involved in either voluntary or community service.  Most believed that:

  • it was especially significant that employers ought to recognise involvement in the National Citizens Service,
  • that those who would undertake the NCS should decide on their NCS course after discussion with those organising the scheme,
  • that people should work with other people that they do not know
  • there should be a official ceremony where participants could talk about their experiences and the things they have learnt.
  • Nicky told inLoughborough, "The National Citizens Service is an opportunity for young adults to meet new people, learn new skills and really stretch themselves.  And we should all benefit from their experiences - since they will feel as if society appreciates them more and we will have the benefit of their new found skills and motivation."
