Artspace Exhibition
Posted on 08/10/2007
P. Klein
Saturday saw the opening of an art exhibition at the University by Artspace. Loughborough Artspace is a group of approximately 30 visual artists from the Loughborough area who work with a variety of disciplines and this is probably one of, if not the, best contemporary art exhibition they have had to date.
Artspace have become part of our community since they started in 1997 as a non-profit making voluntary organisation aimed at unite, develop and promote art in the area. They achieve this not only through exhibitions such as the one just opened but also organise various community events and workshops to get people to participate and remove attitudinal barriers. It is made possible through the support of various organisations, including the University, Charnwood Borough Council, Leicestershire County Council, Charnwood Arts and Loughborough Welfare Trusts to name a few.
Speaking at the James France Building at Loughborough University on Saturday evening, Mike Jones, Chairman of Leicestershire County Council, told the visitors that he had first gone to an Artspace exhibition, not in an official capacity, but as a member of the public and was very impressed. Since then he had made sure that he has attended every preview or exhibition. Commenting on the new exhibition he said that the quality and diversity was tremendous and the best so far. He went on to say that one of the reasons for the success was the instinct, passion and effort that the group obviously had.
Nick Slater from Loughborough Universitys Arts Centre said that they were glad to host the exhibition and it would be great for staff and students to see the space transformed and the association was something they were pleased about and would look forward to further exhibitions.
Nick is responsible for the Universitys new arts programme - Radar. The programme involves artists who share an interest in working outside of the conventional surroundings of gallery or theatre and intends to explore the bond between artist, environment and spectator achieving a more direct and evocative engagement. As it also considers the context of Loughborough and will engage local people as both audience and participant. You can find out more information on their website.
If you wish to visit the exhibition it runs until the 2nd November 2007. Use the main entrance to the University on Epinal Way.
