Call to promote markets
Posted on 12/10/2007
Loughborough Newsdesk
Loughborough MP Andy Reed urged Ministers to do more to promote markets for emerging new energy technologies like hydrogen fuel cells. Essential change to the character of the UK electricity networks is necessary in order to meet the future demands. The beginning of new, distributed generating technology in concert with the deployment of considerable amounts of intermittent, often remote, renewable energy sources will entail significant changes to the way our electricity power grid are designed, operated and controlled.
Speaking at the House of Commons in London Andy Reed welcomed the enormous £1bn venture that is the Energy Technology Institute to be based at Loughborough University, which we reported on last month. Andy also welcomed the particular Fuel Cell work that was being backed, but stressed that the Government Ministers look at ways of helping cultivate the market place for new goods.
Andy Reed said: "Obviously I am delighted that Loughborough was chosen to be the hub of the new Energy Institute and I lobbied hard for it to come to my constituency because I have seen for myself over the years that we are global leaders in some of the new technologies. However, we need to see the markets flourish for these new products and I want the government to help create the right financial climate for these new technologies to compete. I will keep pushing the government on this as such changes will have a massive impact on our target to reduce C02 emissions"
