old personAction to prevent accidents at home is being highlighted by Leicestershire County Council.

Almost every minute of every hour of every day someone over the age of 65 has an accident at home in Britain. As with many accidents, most can be prevented. It is the people in this age group who also are the most at risk of having an accident and becoming seriously injured or even killed.

Various organisations around the county, including voluntary organisations, businesses and the likes of Leicestershire County Council have been working together to promote the awareness of safety issues in the home with the aim of reducing accidents. Planned to coincide with Age Concerns Safer homes week (next week, 22nd " 26th October) various displays will be in libraries across the county including Loughborough.

The following week there will be various drop-ins where staff from various organisations will be on hand to provide professional helpful advice and information on all aspects of the subject. These include:

  • The Fire & Rescue Service performing free safety checks and installation of smoke alarms.
  • Trading Standards giving advice on how to deal with unwanted callers
  • New for old electric blanket amnesty, again by Trading Standards & the Co-op
  • Demonstration of services, aids and gadgets to make homes a safer place.

The surgery for Loughborough will be at the Library on Granby Street between 10am and 4pm on 1st November 2007.
