Asian Voice, Ramada Hotel, LoughboroughLeading the way at todays (15th October 2007) re-launched Charnwood Youth Conference that was held at the Ramada Hotel in Loughborough was Asian Voice. The group, predominantly from Burleigh College, spoke about why their group was successful and the issues that have concerned them.

The Youth Conferences purpose is to provide a real forum where our young people can have a platform to discuss and express their views as to what is important to them and the issues that need addressing.

Charnwood Borough Council has previously identified that there are 38,300 people under the age of 19 in the Borough and that there are surveys to show that 14% of this age group have engaged in some sort of community activity and 50% have taken part in fundraising for charity. However the views of young people are traditionally not taken into account by decision makers and the Charnwood Youth Conference is an attempt to rectify this in line with the Governments policy.

At the conference, which had a mixture of students from Schools and Youth Groups from across the Borough, council officers took on advisory roles.

Charnwood Youth, Ramada Hotel, LoughboroughThe issues raised today, which included Public Safety and cheaper and better facilities such as transport, will influence the Boroughs decision making process. The work done by the Youth Council will also have an influence at a county level through the Countys youth forum.
