Operation Sentinel
Posted on 15/10/2007
Loughborough Newsdesk
Today saw the start of a multi agency project in Loughborough to clean up the streets and promote education with regard to disposal of waste, fire safety and securing property.
The area, known as the student triangle, is predominately let to students, with some Loughborough landlords receiving up to £1M per year in rent because of the amount of properties they own in the area. Last month, the Police working with CBCs Community Safety Officers arranged a meeting with landlords of privately rented properties to highlight the actions they could be taking to help prevent crime. (http://www.inloughborough.com/news/crime_220807.shtml)
The multiagency approach, code named Sentinel, deliberately coincides with Not In My Neighbourhood week which is between 15 and 21 October and is about Loughboroughs citizens joining forces with local agencies to say no to local crime, robbery and burglary, anti-social behaviour and alcohol misuse. To raise awareness in the area more than 3,000 leaflets have been distributed locally and at the nearby supermarket " Sainsburys.
Councillor David Snartt, who is Charnwood Borough Councils Cabinet Lead for community Safety said "We have worked closely with official partners, through the Crime Reduction Partnership but also with those at grass roots level who live in these areas. A special mention should be given to the Storer Action Residents Group, who have supported the work of the partnership and we thank them for their involvement.
Today (Monday 15th October 2007) , saw the agencies start with removing rubbish from the streets, identifying abandoned vehicles and arranging for their removal, the identification of combustible waste by the fire service requiring removal. It is estimated that between 7 and 10 Tonnes of waste will be collected.
During the rest of this week various other activities will be taking place including the distribution of Crime Prevention Advice Packs, high profile patrols to prevent and disrupt crime, visits by fire officers for fire prevention advice, target hardening vulnerable properties, cycle security marking and tagging. The door to door calling will enable every resident in the area to get information, help and assistance that is useful to their circumstances.
The Junior detective scheme that we reported on last week (http://www.inloughborough.com/news/childsafety_111007.shtml) will be repeated at Loughborough C of E Primary School and Saint Marys Catholic Primary School this week.
On Friday there will be information displays at the Storer Road Community Centre from various agencies such as Neighbourhood Watch Association, Emergency Services and the Police will be assisting in marking property in a similar way that occurred on the University campus a couple of weeks ago (http://www.inloughborough.com/news/crime_041007.shtml). There will even be a BBQ!
This is the second time that the multiagency approach has been used in this area and the practice of combining forces has now been replicated by other Councils.
The agencies and organisations that are involved in the Storer Road area scheme are:
- Police
- Charnwood Borough Council
- Neighbourhood Watch Association
- Leicestershire Fire and Rescue
- Residents / Tenants Community Groups
- Carpenters Arms
- Graffiti Removal Service
- Violo Environmental Service
- PRIDE alarms
- Turning Point
- Loughborough Students Union
