It must have been one of the fastest trials at Loughborough Magistrates Court this afternoon. Gareth Christian Evans and Thomas Forbes had previously pleaded not guilty to the charge of theft from a car on Canal Bank back in April of this year and were due to appear at 2pm this afternoon (16th October 2007).

However both failed to turn up, Evans could not attend because they had been arrested in connection with another incident elsewhere. Forbes however did not give a reason for not appearing at the Court and was tried in his absence. A warrant has now been issued for his arrest and when found he will be returned to court to hear his sentence.

Pictures of the pair, taken moments before the crime in April 2007 have been exclusively obtained by inLoughborough and are shown.

Todays proceedings, some 6 months after the original offence not only involved legal representation for both the prosecution and the defence but also three magistrates, a court advisor, the witness service, the victim of the crime, two witnesses of the crime (who even had taken photographs), two police constables, one detective chief inspector. And that were just the people involved today. One can only wonder at the cost involved.
