The event, which was open to the public, included a barbecue and a display of owls from the Berkley Owl Sanctuary.

Green-fingered volunteers have been busy recently and assisted young people to make over a Loughborough youth centres garden.

The Pegasus project " a group for young people with special needs " have transformed the garden. This was made possible by a grant from the Catalyst Project which funds schemes involving young people.

The group have been supported by Leicestershire Cares who match volunteers with organisations who need some assistance.

Jeneane Dowd, a youth worker with the project, said: "The volunteers were amazing! They worked non-stop and made such a difference to the garden. The young people helped to design the garden and choose the plants."

Sarah Usher, who is a member of Pegasus said "it will be really good to have a new garden where we can enjoy learning about plants and how to look after them

Janet Holland, a youth development worker told inLoughborough: "The garden has always been a focal point where young people can enjoy being outdoors but over the years it has become more of a "wild" area. Having the opportunity to plan a new garden has been both a challenge and a steep learning curve for everyone involved. Young people have been involved from the start and have developed new skills like working as part of a team and thinking about how the garden could be developed.

"Having a new garden will benefit all the young people who use the youth centre - giving them an environment where they can enjoy nature and learn about the environment in a "hands on" way by caring for the plants etc.
