fire at windmill roadLoughborough skyline has just been enveloped by an acrid thick smoke. By a fire, that started at approximately 32 minutes ago (6pm) this evening (Sunday 21st October 2007).

The smoke plume across the horizon billowing up into the sky drew crowds to the Windmill Road area of Loughborough which is near the Great Central Railway.  Numerous phone calls were made by the public to the inLoughborough news desk letting us know of the incident (Thankyou!).

The inLoughborough reporters and photographers were rapidly on the scene and two fire engines could be seen in attendance. The Police by this time for public safety had cordoned off the whole of the road. The Windmill Road area of Loughborough has a large number of partially demolished buildings. People who were nearby in the park on the Great Central Road when the fire started said that there were massive flames and they thought that some gas pipes had gone up. The Police at this time have refused to comment on which building was involved in the incident or to the cause of it. However from the view available from the Great Central Road end of Windmill Road it seemed to be before the Beeches Road end.

The fire was obviously brought under control rapidly and after an hour the crowds were starting to disperse.

We will bring you further news on this item as it is made available. If you were at the scene and managed to capture any images let us know - we will glady put them in the albums and credit you.
