I was privileged in the early days of my mayoralty to present The Royal Anglian Regiment with the Freedom of Entry to the Borough of Charnwood. The attendance of thousands of members of the local community at the parade and presentation in Loughborough Market Place was inspiring.

As the Regiment marched past I was conscious that in the coming days their march would continue to Germany thence to Iraq.

From the Crimea to Basra, men and women, volunteers and conscripts have answered the call to the flag.

Not all return, and of those who do many continue to suffer the consequences of injury and trauma.

Remembrance Sunday presents an opportunity to show our respect for all of them, and our acts of remembrance can be enhanced by our contribution to the Poppy Appeal in the period leading up to the services on the 11th of the 11th.

As you purchase your poppy please be generous: - They were.

Joe Tormey

Mayor of Charnwood
