Loughborough Fair - Official Opening
Posted on 01/11/2007
P. Klein
1st November 2007
Next Wednesday (7th November 2007) will mark the start of Loughboroughs 780th November Fair.
The first Fair granted on 27th January 1221, was to be a two day occasion and its opening date was each year to be 31st July, or the eve before the feast of St. Peter ad Vincula. On 28th April 1227 King Henry III granted the town its Thursday Market. However it was in 1228, the manor was given permission to hold another (second) Fair annually on November 2nd. In 1881, the Local Board of Health obtained an order altering the opening day of the November Fair to the second Thursday in November.
With all that history said the CBC are making sure that all is in hand so revellers can have all the fun!
Peter Legg, Mayoral Officer, said: "The Council has always enjoyed a proactive role in the arrangements of the Fair and its fair to say that a lot of officer time and effort goes into making the event a hugely enjoyable success for all.
At 5:45pm on the 7th November 2007, to a fanfare from trumpeters and the beat of a drum, provided by Loughborough Endowed School the civic party will enter the Market Place following the Mace-Bearer. The civic party will comprise of the Mayor, Deputy, Chief Executive of the Council and Honorary Aldermen.
The musicians will play another fanfare after which the Mace-Bearer will announce the speakers: The Leader of the Council, The Chairman of the Midlands Section of the Showmans Guild of Great Britain, and the Mayor.
The Mayor this year will open the Fair by reading from the charters granted by King Henry III. Previously the Mayor has done this from the Town Hall Balcony in the towns Market Place, however this year it will be from the Waltzer steps.
