Andy Reed Campaigns for HMO Control
Posted on 06/11/2007
P. Klein
Local MP Andy Reed is meeting DCLG Minister Iain Wright to discuss the effect of HMOs in Loughborough and press for greater control and regulation locally.
Reed has led the campaign in Parliament over recent years for greater controls over houses of multiple occupation (where up to 6 people can live in one house without regulation) and has worked closely with local groups such as the SARG group in the Storer area of the town in an attempt to progress the matter.
Andy Reed has also worked closely with the University, student representatives and other local residents in an effort to address the problems and is delighted that the Department of Communities and Local Government has been announced that the government intends next year to consult on proposals to amend planning regulations in relation to HMOs
Andy Reed said:
"I have led this campaign in Parliament for many years on behalf of local residents in Loughborough and I am delighted that the Government has announced to formally consult the public on this issue next year.
"I am meeting the Minister later this month to press home the point on behalf of local residents that we want to see greater control and regulation of HMOs locally. I am also pleased that the Government has announced it will be establishing a Taskforce to advise on related measures to tackle problems related to high concentrations of such properties in towns such as Loughborough.
"I hope that through our hard work we will see changes locally that will protect local communities and ensure that all groups locally have a say in how their area develops.
