This comes at a time when the weather is turning colder and many people are choosing to use the car rather than walk or cycle to work.

Petrol station owners say that they have little choice in the matter as they only add a small 2p per litre to the price and the cost increase is something they cant reduce.

Filling the average 60L petrol tank now costs almost £7 more than it did this time last year.

Filling up his car at Sainsburys in Loughborough where unleaded was 100.9p, David Farmer said: It makes you think if you really need to use the car, unfortunately I cant think of ways to avoid using it

Industry analysts have been advising that the fuel prices would increase as the price of crude oil reaches the 100 US dollars a barrel. The AA has warned that prices might increase more in the coming weeks.

Other petrol stations in the area are charging similar prices. Sandicliffe on Derby Road in Loughborough have been charging 101.9p as have TCS on Belton Road.

Diesel already costs more than £1 a litre at many filling stations with Sainsburys and Morrisons charging 102.9p, Sandicliffe and Tesco charging 103.9p.

Motorists inLoughborough spoke to said the rises were hitting them hard. Adrian Hammond, 35, from Shepshed, said: " I dont think this price rise is going to stop now. I recon that Im spending about £10 per week than I was last year. Its a lot of money.

Sarah Argent from Loughborough said:When I bought my car I could fill her up for under £30. Its just cost me £41.

Prices in the area have increased by about 13% since the beginning of the year (prices in Charnwood were typically under 90p litre), however during the last year prices for crude oil in America have risen by 96%.  The Road Haulage Association said diesel prices could put many hauliers in danger of going out of business.

Ryan Philips, from Loughborough, said: "Well all the price increases are going to be passed on. If it costs more to get stuff to the shops then the shops will put their prices up. Even if you dont have a car you are going to end up paying for it. Its bad news whichever way you look at it. Even if you got an LPG engine you will still end up paying when you buy your shopping.

One forecourt staff member, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "We have had a couple of motorists moan at us about the price. But what do they want us to do? They think that we are making a fortune because the price has gone up. If anyones making a fortune its certainly not me! I dont even get a discount on my petrol!
