Survey Reveals On-Line Errors
Posted on 03/12/2007
P. Klein
A recent survey by Leicestershire Trading Standards of 20 web sites found sellers dont always supply the information required by law.
In the run up to Christmas research shows that Leicestershire residents are expected to spend an average of £500 per person on internet purchases. Most buying goes smoothly, but the most common complaints to Trading Standards about internet buying are regarding delivery and returns.
The survey results showed that 14 sites did not tell users of their right to return the goods for a refund and 7 did not have an address, or had just a PO Box number, and half were not pricing goods correctly.
One of the most important rights for consumers is the option to return the goods within seven days of delivery for any reason and get a full refund. This is so that goods that buyers havent had the chance to inspect before purchase can be returned. The goods must be returned in the same condition as when they arrived, and payment for return postage may be required.
Safe shopping tips:
- Be wary of companies that only use a PO Box number, or even give no address, get a full address.
- Remember your rights to return goods within 7 days of receipt-the retailer cant take this right away
- Keep copies of e mails and sales confirmations
- Dont leave it until the last minute. Remember the delivery arrangements are normally within 30 days unless you agree otherwise.
- If your purchase is for more than £100 using your credit card to pay may give added protection if things do go wrong
David Bull, Head of Trading Standards Service said:
"The law requires that consumers are told certain information, including the right to cancel. The project has revealed that many businesses are confused about these and other requirements. Trading Standards Officers are in the process of contacting the businesses concerned with a view to making sure that they trade fairly and comply with the law
