PRIMARY Schools in Charnwood have signed up to a new free service which aims to teach children the three Rs - reduce, reuse, recycle!

Charnwood Borough Council is now collecting recycling from 29 primary schools and encouraging pupils about the importance of waste reduction.

The scheme, which began on 20th November 2007, follows a successful trial at schools last year and operates in a similar way to the Councils household kerbside recycling collections.

Schools are asked to put paper and cardboard in the red sacks with washed and squashed cans, tins and plastic bottles in the green bags.

As part of the service, Charnwood officers are also offering a range of educational events including talks, activities and lesson plans to promote the benefits of recycling to youngsters.

Kath Kay, Charnwood Borough Councils Waste Policy Manager, said: "There has been an enthusiastic uptake of the free recycling scheme across the Borough.

"The service helps schools reduce their waste disposal costs, helps the environment and teaches children about the importance of waste minimisation.

"Around 45% of the average schools waste is paper based and 11% is cardboard, all of which could be recycled.

"Add to this bottles, cans and plastic milk bottles used at schools by pupils and recycling could soon have a massive impact on the amount of waste schools send to landfill sites.

Recycling officers at Charnwood are also visiting a number of schools in the run-up to Christmas to promote the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle message.

During the lessons, children will make the most of household items that cannot be recycled and would normally be buried in landfill sites by turning them into imaginative Christmas decorations.

Cllr Mike Preston, Charnwood Borough Councils Cabinet member for the Environment and Conservative councillor for Queniborough, added: "Its vital that children know how to help the environment by being taught the three Rs - reduce, reuse, recycle!

"These sorts of activities can be a lot of fun but also extremely important to help create a cleaner, greener future.
