No More War Loughborough
Posted on 05/12/2007
P. Klein
Loughborough University has the second highest number of military projects in the UK according to a report published yesterday (4th December 2007).
The report, Study War No More, looked at the top 26 universities between 2001 and 2006 and uncovers over 1,900 projects funded in sponsorship by arms companies and public military bodies. Written by Tim Street and Martha Beale it is published jointly by the Fellowship of Reconciliation (FoR) and Campaign Against Arms Trade (CAAT).
Loughborough’s top funders were Rolls Royce, BAE Systems and the MoD who financed projects mainly in the departments of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering, Electronic and Electrical Engineering and the department of Manufacturing Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Projects that have been undertaken include the likes of ‘Explosively Driven Electric Pulse Generators’, ‘Analysis of Air-Swirl Fuel Injector and Pre-Mixers’ and ‘Non Explosive Canopy Opening Systems’. On the amount of money received Loughborough University is ranked 5th.
The report intends to support students apprehensive about the impact their institutions have on international peace and conflict; and to promote debate on the subject of the democratic shortfall within academic institutions and the ends and ethics of current research and how research is funded.
