Credit Card Scam
Posted on 13/12/2007
P. Klein
Trading Standards have had information that consumers are being called by a person claiming to be from the fraud department of their credit / bank card issuer, who quotes lots of information about the card, contact details & possibly family details as well.
They ask questions & then say that money seems to have been taken illegally from their account & that it will be refunded.
The caller then requests the last 3 digits on the signature strip on the reverse of the card to confirm that the card is in the control of the owner. Once they have that number, the criminals can make cash transactions using the card.
The important message is to make every effort to protect personal & banking data as far as possible.
• Never give any banking or personal details to anyone who phones or e mails you. Phone your bank or card company to check and report it
• Do not put bank or credit card statements into recycling or a dustbin without shredding them, preferably with a ‘crosscut’ shredder;
• Shred any post bearing your name, address & / or personal information;
• Only use secure websites for buying online with the closed padlock symbol at the bottom right of the payment page.
David Bull, Head of Trading Standards said ‘Unfortunately there are criminals that are using various underhand means to obtain bank or credit card details. People should make sure they protect themselves from such cons by never giving their bank account details to someone who contacts them out of the blue. Furthermore always carefully check bank and credit card statements for unauthorised entries’
