Loughborough Looses Olympic Bid
Posted on 15/01/2008

Charnwood Borough Council has today (Tuesday, 15 January 2008) come out in support of Loughborough University, following the announcement from British Olympic Association that Team GB will be based at Aldershot for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Loughborough University, Bath University and Aldershot Army base had all been in contention to be the host of the British Teams training camp. Aldershot had entered the bidding late, but had the support of the head of the British Olympic Association (BOA), Simon Clegg, who was ex-Army.
Leader of the Council, Cllr Richard Shepherd and Conservative councillor for Quorn & Mountsorrel Castle, said: “Although it is a disappointing that Team GB will not use Loughborough as its official base camp for the Olympics, we are looking to the positive; in that we can still welcome world-class athletes to our elite facilities, right on our doorstep.
“We will continue to support the University in its bid to attract other foreign teams and hope that over the next four years, Loughborough will develop its reputation in sporting excellence.”
Cllr Peter Lewis, Cabinet Lead for Leisure and Conservative councillor for Loughborough Nanpantan, added: “Loughborough University has a lot to be proud of and although this may seem a disappointment, I for one, welcome the opportunity to attract foreign teams to our multi-talented, diverse and cultural Borough.”
