New Play Equipment in Loughborough
Posted on 15/01/2008
P. Klein
Today (Tuesday 15th January 2007) saw three brand new play areas officially opened across the Borough, thanks to Charnwood Borough Council.
Jubilee Park, Cumberland Road Playing Field and Rendell Street revamped play areas were the places where state-of-the-art equipment was unveiled by Cabinet Lead Member for Leisure, Cllr Peter Lewis (Conservative councillor for Loughborough Nanpantan) and Cabinet Lead for Play, Cllr Hilary Fryer (Conservative councillor for Barrow & Sileby West) in a one day opening extravaganza, with local school children being the first to test drive the new kit.
The new play equipment, which has been chosen by the local children through consultations held by Charnwood Borough Council in schools in Loughborough and elsewhere in the Borough, cost £366,000 and has been installed by local Syston based civil engineering contractors Danaher & Walsh, who have undertaken the full refurbishment of the three play areas on behalf of the Council.
The scheme is the end of a three year improvement programme to all Charnwood’s Council owned playing areas and has seen more than £1.1million invested across the Borough.
Cllr Peter Lewis, said: “Play is vital to children’s healthy development. The opening of these final three schemes marks the end of the effective commitment from Charnwood Borough Council to our children and young people. What makes this occasion extra special is that the children themselves, who choose the equipment, will be the first ones to try it out.”
Each play area is themed and contains quality assured equipment designed to ensure long life and prevent vandalism. The play areas contain equipment suitable for a variety of ages from four to 16 years old, with a diverse range of abilities and needs catered for.
Speaking about the Loughborough revamped play areas Cllr Hilary Fryer said: “Charnwood Borough Council understands the need for play and these new revamped areas coupled with the two new play rangers will bring real health and fitness benefits to our children and young people.”
