Charnwood Borough Council and Charnwood Neighbourhood Housing has today (Thursday, 17 Jan. 08) issued an update situation with regards to flooding and the continued risk of flooding across Loughborough and the rest of the Borough.

A Council Spokesperson, said: “We would like to reassure all residents that we have effective plans in place to deal with many emergencies and we are working with the relevant agencies and partners including the fire and rescue service, police and the environment agency to identify risks and protect vulnerable people and property. Forecasts indicate that the wet weather will subside, shortly.

“At this present time we are advising residents to contact the Environment Agency for guidance on dealing with flooding and prevention. This can be done through the internet via http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/subjects/flood/ or by calling Floodline on 0845 988 1188, where warning text messages and recorded messages can be sent to people at risk, as well as providing useful information for those already suffering.

“Residents at risk of flooding are advised to follow the Environment Agency guidance in making their own sandbags. However, the Council does have a small supply of sandbags for vulnerable homes. Those concerned can contact the Contact Centre on (01509) 63 4567.

“We continue to advise residents to listen for warnings on local radio, TV and through Floodline. Pets, vehicles and valued items should be moved to safety, moreover residents are asked to keep a watchful eye on neighbours, particularly the elderly. Sandbags and floor boards should also be put in place if there is a risk, but the property should still be ventilated. Don’t forget to plug sinks and baths. Further advice includes being ready to turn off gas and electricity supplies to your home and unplugging electrical items and moved to a dry place (e.g. upstairs).

“Charnwood Borough Council will continue to issue regular updates through the local media and via the website.”
