Andy Reed MP last night called on all women who served in the Womens Land Army and Womens Timber Corps to come forward to claim a badge of recognition. These women during the dark days of the Second World War, worked hard to provide food and timber for the nation. They helped provide much needed food and timber to keep the country going during the war.

At its peak in 1943 there were some 80,000 women working on the land, and it was continued after the war, finally being disbanded in 1950. These women provided the food and timber this nation needed during the war as the men went off to war.

Hilary Benn, Secretary of State for Environment, has announced the Governments decision to award a badge of recognition to female war veterans who worked on the Home Front to provide food and timber for the nation during the Second World War. The specially designed badge will recognise the tremendous efforts of the Womens Land Army and Womens Timber Corps and acknowledge the debt that the country owes to them.

Andy calls on all these women to come forward if they think they are eligible to claim their badge and receive recognition for the work they did. Applicants will need to supply date of birth, approximate dates of service in the Womens Land Army or Womens Timber Corps and the location at which they were stationed.

Andy says These women deserved to be recognized for the hard work and dedication they showed and I encourage any of these people to come forward to receive the badge. The sacrifices made in the war both at home and abroad should never be forgotten.

If you think you are eligible, contact DEFRA for an application form which can be found on the website or by telephoning 08459 33 55 77 or e-mailing Dermot.McInerney@defra.gsi.gov.uk.
