Reed Argues For Better Service From Post Office Following News of 4 Local Closures
News that 2 Post Offices in Loughborough and 2 in surrounding villages will be closed was described by local MP Andy Reed as unbelievable and kick in the teeth of local residents who had protested to the Post Office. The announcement will be made publicly tomorrow.
Postwatch the consumer voice also made similar points to the Post Office in their submission. They echoed the points raised by Andy Reed MP.
Andy Reed had helped lead campaigns against closure of all the Post Offices arguing a better set of proposals was needed locally to deal with the reducing use of Post Office services.
The Loughborough MP Andy Reed said:
“I fully understand the need to reduce the losses being made by Post Office Ltd as fewer of us use the Post Offices we have. The government will use £1.1bn of taxpayers money to subsidise the remaining Post office to keep them open. Without government backing even more loss making Post offices would have to close.
“However, like most people I didn’t think the configuration of closures was fair. Closing both Ashby Road and Meadow Lane seems wrong. Those in the Ratcliffe Road area now lose a local amenity and the Ashby Road Post office was particularly popular for a wide range of reasons. I am sure given the chance it could build a customer base. I will ask the Post office to look at these again as part of the appeal I will make.
“I have consistently argued that Wymeswold needs a permanent service, and not a simply a mobile unit opening for 14 hours a week. My task now is to lead the battle to achieve the maximum opening hours for Wymeswold residents, flexible around hours which suit their needs. To this extent I am working with local residents to try and achieve this objective”
