There will be a distinctive oriental feel to activities taking place at the library in Loughborough and other libraries  throughout Charnwood and the rest of Leicestershire during the next half term holiday which is between 9th and 16th February.

Planned activities include stories, crafts, puzzles and quizzes to celebrate the Chinese New Year which heralds the year of the Rat and the end of the year of the pig. All libraries will be running a Chinese Quiz Competition to encourage adults and children to find out more about China, its culture and the links the County Council has with the Sichuan region of China. inLoughborough has previously reported Loughborough’s County Councillor Mike Jones recent visit to China. (http://www.inloughborough.com/news/2007/11/china_10326.php). Winner’s prizes will include authentic Chinese tea sets plus a host of other Chinese goodies including: complimentary meals for two in a Chinese restaurant (tasty!), a language taster session in Mandarin (sounds difficult), Chinese cookery books and a calligraphy set.

The half term fun is part of a month long ‘Focus on China’ event which runs in County libraries throughout February 2008. The Library Service has created a colourful booklet containing attention-grabbing facts about China and its Sichuan province plus particulars of other sources of useful information – copies will be freely accessible for visitors to take away.

Leicestershire’s link with the Sichuan province in China first began in 1984.

Since then a wide range of activities have taken place between the two regions to promote business, educational and cultural exchange, science and technology.

Further details about the events can be found in the spring issue of the Leicestershire Events Guide which will be available in County ibraries and museums from the end of January. Full details of events and competitions are also available on Leicestershire Libraries’ web site.
