Loughborough Landmark soon to go

The proposals to close a number of public toilets in Charnwood have been flushed away, well all apart from one that didn’t quite escape!

Charnwood Borough Council was considering shutting conveniences in Shepshed, Barrow, Birstall, Sileby and Quorn to save an estimated £50,000. By our reconning at the inLoughborough offices that’s about ½ million people spending a 1p each.

However, the proposal has not been included in the Council’s recommended budgets for 2008-09 – meaning the toilets will remain open.

The Council is, however, recommending that the Automatic Public Convenience (APC) in Loughborough’s Granby Street Car Park is to shut as new toilets in the nearby Queen’s Park are being developed. This will mean that youths who throw fireworks into the toilet and then run up to the multi-storey car park opposite to witness the devastation caused will have to find somewhere else to play (nicely please).

Closing the hitec APC facility will save our Local Authority £270,000 over the next 12 years.

Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet are expected to agree the proposals at a meeting this Thursday (7th February 2008).

They also intend to ask Leisure and Environment officers to investigate future options for the public toilets following a recommendation from the Council’s Scrutiny Committee.

Cllr Mike Preston, Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet member for the Environment and Conservative Councillor for Queniborough, said: “We always said we would take account of views expressed during the budget consultation period.

“Having done this, we can confirm that we are not now going ahead with budget reductions in this area.

“We do however need to continue to take consideration of the resource and service delivery issues for public toilets, particularly when this continues to be hampered by acts of vandalism which then can lead to under use of public facilities and spiralling costs for this service.”

The sockman was unavailable for comment. However he wouldnt have said much anyway.
