Andy Reed, Loughborough’s MP, backed calls yesterday (5th February 2008) for the Government to investigate the profits of big energy supplies amidst the raising costs of energy. Andy calls for the government to look at a one off windfall tax on profits to be used to increase winter fuel payments for the people most in need of help. With the increase in costs associated with energy Andy along with other MP’s have called into question the above inflation increases taken by Npower and British Gas.

Fabian Hamilton, Labour MP for Leeds North East has been concerned that in recent weeks some companies have announced gas and electricity prices  over the present rate of inflation. He therefore has tabled an early day motion in the House of Commons calling on the Government to strongly monitor the profits of the countrys big energy firms. His early day motions says: "This House notes with concern the decision taken by British Gas and Npower to increase the price of gas and electricity greatly above the rate of inflation and the impact this has on vulnerable pensioners.”

Andy signed the Early Day Motion calling on the government to investigate price increases in prices of gas and electricity and impose a windfall tax if necessary.

Andy believes that such increases in the price of energy will wipe out the help and provisions put in place by the Government and impact the most vulnerable pensioners. If profits from these companies rise excessively Andy calls on Government to introduce a windfall tax on the profits to fund a one-off increase in the winter fuel allowance.

The Loughborough MP said “the Government has put in place the winter fuel payments to help the most vulnerable pensioners and I am concerned that now the increases in the price of gas and electricity are excessive and will hit the people who can afford it least the hardest. I want the Government to monitor closely these companies for signs of excessive profits and if found a windfall tax implemented to give more money to the poorest and most vulnerable pensioners.”
