A SERIES of ground-breaking initiatives to help increase night-time trade in Loughborough and make visitors to the town feel even safer in the evenings are being developed.

Charnwood Borough Council and a number of outside agencies, including Leicestershire Police, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue, Pub Watch members and representatives from the security industry, have helped develop a series of initiatives to improve the Night-Time Economy.

Funded by the Government’s Tackling Violent Crime Programme, the idea of a Night Time Economy Plan is being backed by the Charnwood Community Safety Partnership and the Loughborough Town Centre Partnership.

It is proposed that the hours of Street Marshals, who are already on hand to direct people to taxis and help to ensure public order is maintained, will be increased as part of the strategy.

And Street Pastors, who are volunteers from different Christian denominations, will soon be patrolling the town to give practical advice and support to revellers.

Other proposals include the reviewing street lighting, better information signs and gathering  best practice on developing under 18’s nights.

Cllr David Snartt, Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Community Safety, said: “Loughborough is a safe place to go in the evenings but we want to offer even more reassurances to the town’s many visitors.

“We want to make Loughborough a more attractive place to visit in the evening and give everyone an increased peace of mind – and it’s initiatives like this that will help us achieve our goal.”

Adrian McInnes, the chair of Loughborough Town Centre Partnership, added: “I’m wholly supportive of any initiatives that will help to bring more people into Loughborough, particularly families.

“We want people to come to the town and enjoy themselves. Loughborough has many attractions for people of all ages both day and night and this strategy will ensure it remains a safe place to visit.”

Once finalised, the initiatives will be monitored on a bi-monthly basis by the Charnwood Community Safety Partnership.
